World number 36 Ugo Humbert overcame Thanasi Kokkinakis in three tough sets on Wednesday to get his Washington Open campaign underway. The 25-year-old is steadily repairing his ATP ranking, formerly 25th, this season after a year to forget in 2022 and he looks a threat here after making back-to-back semi-finals in Newport and Atlanta. Yosuke Watanuki, also 25, set a career-high ATP world ranking of 99th this week after recently making inroads at tour events but he will smash that after stunning third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime via two tiebreaks on Wednesday in a career-best performance. The Japanese is lucky to be here after Yibing Wu was forced to retire after collapsing in their first round contest but that sort of momentum can be a hard force to stop. Humbert’s ceiling is very high, certainly top 20 level at least, but there is some baggage there that was not in his game two years ago. The players have seen three tiebreaks in their combined three games so far so back Humbert to win at least a set and add at least one tiebreak in the match.
