THE PREDICTION
This match looks about as likely to be a five-set thriller as a damp squib between two of the more unfortunate players of the past two seasons. Former world number 25 Ugo Humbert started 2022 off in some serious form before contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open totally destroyed his progress and Matteo Berrettini suffered a similar fate on the eve of Wimbledon last summer, having finished runner-up there the season before. Former world number six Berrettini has also struggled with an inordinate amount of injuries over the last two years to barely feature on tour but a recent run to the round of 16 at SW19 was proof that the heart is still there if his body could just stop letting him down. As it stands, world number 33 Humbert faces number 36 Berrettini with the better recent form on hardcourts but Berrettini leads their head-to-head 2-0 with two straight-set results on the surface, including here in 2020. Back the Italian to earn at least a set and add at least a tiebreak in the match, with one in each of their previous meetings, to leave the result up to chance.
