THE PREDICTION
Emil Ruusuvuori and Ugo Humbert, both 24 years old, will meet in the first round of a Masters event for the second time in as many weeks after the Finn won at this stage of the Madrid Open late last month. The world number 43 went on to take a set from an out-of-sorts Carlos Alcaraz before the Spaniard rallied to come through in three sets en-route to the title. Meanwhile, Humbert moved back up to world number 50 after winning the Cagliari Challenger last week, coming back from a set down to upset fourth seed Laslo Djere. It will be fascinating to see if and how the Frenchman pushes on from here as a former world number 25 whose form took a nosedive last season following covid-19 complications but Ruusuvuori leads their head-to-head 2-0 with both matches coming on clay. A five-set thriller at Roland-Garros last summer is a better litmus test than their Madrid encounter for what could transpire here in Rome and a five-match winning streak on Italian clay should see Humbert earn at least a set here.
