THE PREDICTION
World number 38 Adrian Mannarino takes on number 40 Ugo Humbert in a rare all-left-hander encounter on Saturday. 35-year-old Mannarino beat his doubles partner this week Jordan Thompson in three sets on Thursday, conceding just two games in his two sets either side of a tiebreak in favour of the Aussie, to maintain his strong form on grass this summer. The Frenchman recently finished runner-up to Christopher Eubanks at the Mallorca Championships after back-to-back quarter-finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Queens but he could struggle against his compatriot, with Humbert’s talents still dormant as a resurgent former top 30 star. 25-year-old Humbert has beaten two former Hall of Fame Open champions so far this week in Steve Johnson and the returning Kevin Anderson without dropping a set but Mannarino will be a significantly tougher test in these conditions.
Both player are excellent on grass but Mannarino has the better form on the surface in recent weeks. Humbert beat hi compatriot in straight sets at Roland-Garros in late May, though, to level their head-to-head at 1-1 and taking the younger Frenchman to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid an outright winner.
