THE PREDICTION
World number 14 Tommy Paul beat qualifier Stefano Travaglia in four sets on Monday in a match that really should have been settled sooner. The 26-year-old beat Carlos Alcaraz in three sets at the Canada Masters, for a second season on the spin, earlier this month before losing to the world number one in three in Cincinnati a week later and if he can find that level in New York it should take top 10 opposition to oust him. Paul reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January and he is arguably playing better now but this is no gimme against the enigmatic Roman Safiullin, who conceded just six games to clay-court specialist Marco Cecchinato. World number 60 Safiullin ghosted through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last month and took a set from Jannik Sinner before defeat.
The Russian looks like finally coming into the potential he exhibited as a junior and he beat Paul in straight sets at the Madrid Open back in April to look a serious threat here. Taking Paul to win at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable victors looks the suitably cautious concession but the US Open crowd should be able to drag their home hopeful over the line.
