THE PREDICTION
World number 112 Roman Safiullin provided a mini upset on Thursday with a three-set victory over Nicolas Jarry, one of the form players this season on clay. The 25-year-old came through qualifying well to make the main draw for the first time in Madrid and he has nothing to lose here after claiming his first ever Masters-level win. World number 17 Tommy Paul is an excellent all-courter enjoying the form of his career so far this year but he lost his first match on clay this season at the heavily disrupted Houston Open earlier this month. The 25-year-old struggled on the clay swing this time last season before coming into form on grass but it would be a surprise to see this new and improved version fall at the first hurdle. Three sets seem likelier than two here and that does make taking Safiullin to earn at least a set a tempting option outside of an accumulator. Otherwise, the suitably cautious pick is for Paul to earn at least a set here.
