World number 112 Roman Safiullin provided a mini upset on Thursday with a three-set victory over Nicolas Jarry, one of the form players this season on clay. The 25-year-old came through qualifying well to make the main draw for the first time in Madrid and he has nothing to lose here after claiming his first ever Masters-level win. World number 17 Tommy Paul is an excellent all-courter enjoying the form of his career so far this year but he lost his first match on clay this season at the heavily disrupted Houston Open earlier this month.
