The 30-year-old beat Paul in their only previous encounter at the Miami Masters two years ago to look a sudden dark horse for the quarter-finals but his compatriot is a much better player two years on.
Paul claimed the biggest win of his career here last season with a stunning three-setter over Carlos Alcaraz taking him to the quarter-finals before defeat to Dan Evans and he will have to avoid that sort of depreciation here. Three sets seem likely considering their results this week to take Paul to earn at least one or consider a one-off on this match to need a decider.
