THE PREDICTION

Top seed Tommy Paul came into the Hall of Fame Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th and played like it on Wednesday, ousting Ethan Quinn in straight sets. The 26-year-old recently finished runner-up to Francisco Cerundolo at the Eastbourne International to bring some serious grass form into Wimbledon but he might have paid for his efforts after just being edged out over five sets in the third round by Jiri Lehecka. Four-time Newport champion John Isner avoided a potential early upset with an assured straight-sets victory over Corentin Moutet on Wednesday. The 38-year-old is finally slowing up on tour after so many years at the top of the sport but he remains a serious threat on grass and on US soil, on which he has won 14 of his 16 ATP titles. Paul should have enough to overcome Isner in this third meeting between the two but it would be a first victory for the younger American in their head-to-head. Back Paul to win outright or consider taking the top seed to earn at least a set with at least tiebreak in the match.
