THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Tommy Paul proved himself a genuine top 10 contender on Friday by beating Carlos Alcaraz in three sets at the Canada Masters, emulating his result over the Spaniard in Montreal last season. The 26-year-old stayed focused whilst his opponent fluctuated between brilliance and angst on court but he will find a totally different prospect in ice-cool Jannik Sinner next, who ended Gael Monfils’ remarkable run in three sets on Friday. This looks set to be a real thriller on Saturday with Sinner and Paul sharing a finely poised 1-1 head-to-head record, with both of their matches going to three sets last summer in Madrid, to Sinner, on clay and at Eastbourne, to Paul, on grass. A first hardcourt meeting should come as close between solid all-courters but, despite his efforts against Alcaraz, Paul remains the slight underdog here. Back Sinner to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable finalists or consider taking the three-set option.
