26-year0old Tommy Paul ended 20-year-old Ben Shelton’s incredible debut run at the Australian Open back in January with a tight four set victory for an intriguing backdrop to this round of 16 clash on US soil. World number 14 Paul has only really just enjoyed the fanfare as a top home hopeful in new York after a four-set victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Saturday but he will do well to command the same support against rising star Shelton, who knows how to win the crowd around. The world number 47 overcame Aslan Karatsev in impressive four sets on Saturday to continue his upwards trajectory from some poor form over the summer but Paul will be his toughest test yet as a deceptively tough man to dismantle when in this mood.
Paul beat Carlos Alcaraz in three sets at the Canada Masters three weeks ago and then lost just as closely to the world number one in Cincinnati ahead of the US Open. If the 14th seed can maintain that level he can edge through here but sets should go both ways. Consider taking both players to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance or back Paul to take at least two as the likelier of two very capable winners.
