World number 34 Tomas Martin Etcheverry and number 49 Stan Wawrinka will meet in the second round of a Grand Slam for the second time this summer after Wawrinka overcame the Argentine in four sets at Wimbledon. Former world number three Wawrinka won the US Open in 2016, his last of three Grand Slam titles in a remarkable three-year period of peak form, but he recently reached his first tour final since 2019 at the Umag Open last month after spending much of the past few years trying to stay fit enough on tour. Wawrinka beat Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets on Tuesday to look a considerable threat to anyone ranked outside the top 20 this fortnight whilst 24-year-old Etcheverry laboured to a 10-8 championship tiebreak win over qualifier Otto Virtanen in five gruelling sets. The Argentine has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour, with his run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros to show for his efficacy on clay, but back Wawrinka to come through this test outright in conditions that much better suit the Swiss.
