World number 29 Tomas Martin Etcheverry beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets on Thursday to begin what promises to be his run to a maiden ATP title. The Argentine enjoyed an eye-catching run to the third round of the Australian Open last month to continue his excellent rise up the rankings but he is at his best on clay, on which he reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last summer. With top seed Francisco Cerundolo out it looks like a race between Etcheverry and defending champion Sebastian Baez to the final this weekend but world number 93 Federico Coria is well capable of upsetting that if he is underestimated.
31-year-old Coria beat an out-of-sorts Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Thursday to back-up an excellent comeback over fifth seed Daniel Altmaier in the first round and he will be well-backed as a popular player in his own right as much as his fated sibling Guillermo. Back Etcheverry to win this first tour-level encounter between them, with three sets about as likely as two.
