World number 29 Tomas Martin Etcheverry received a bye to the round of 16 at the Cordoba Open as the third seed this week and he will be desperate to win a maiden ATP title on home clay, be it here or in Buenos Aires next week. The 24-year-old has fast become one of the more dependable performers outside of the top 20, on clay and hardcourts, proving so with two impressive straight-sets wins over Andy Murray and Gael Monfils at the Australian Open before defeat to Novak Djokovic. The Argentine is at his best on clay though, as is world number 79 Bernabe Zapata Miralles, with both players enjoying runs to the second week at Roland-Garros in recent summers. The 27-year-old has endured a tough time away from his best surface, including a five-set exit to Etcheverry at Wimbledon last July, but a comeback over Cristian Garin on Tuesday should see him rejuvenated here. Back Etcheverry to have too much, backed by a partisan home crowd, but three sets seem likelier than two here.
