27-year-old Daniil Medvedev moved back up to world number two after a totally surprising run to his first ever title on clay at the Italian Open, where he overcame a tiring Holger Rune in straight sets. The Russian has won more matches than any other player on tour this season with a remarkable 39-5 record and five titles to show for 2023 already. Medvedev’s best run was a quarter-final exit to Stefanos Tsitsipas here in 2021 but despite his dislike for clay he has to be considered a dark horse for the title this year in Paris, particularly on the other side of the draw from favourites Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. World number 172 Thiago Seyboth Wild qualified well this week to make his debut in Roland-Garros and this will be only his second Grand Slam appearance after a straight-sets defeat to Dan Evans at the US Open in 2020. It remains to be seen how well Medvedev will take to the conditions in Paris but the Russian has a near-perfect route to the latter stages and he will be eager to blast through the first few rounds as efficiently as possible.
