23-year-old Facundo Diaz Acosta set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 90th last month after some strong work on the Challenger circuit, on South American clay courts, and he took Taylor Fritz to five sets on his Australian Open debut to look ready for a breakthrough season. The Argentine beat Federico Gomes in straight sets on Monday and he faces another all-Argentine clash here against Thiago Agustin Tirante, who also ousted a compatriot in Francisco Comesana. The 22-year-old will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 103rd for his efforts so far and he has that added sprinkle of momentum in his legs after coming through qualifying as a lucky loser. Dias Acosta is the slight favourite on recent form but Tirante is playing with house money this week to suggest that will be very tight indeed.
