World number 111 Thanasi Kokkinakis has suffered more than his fair share of tough, tight defeats this season despite playing well for much of it – most notably in that famous five-set epic with Andy Murray at the Australian Open. The 27-year-old is capable of tennis much better than his current ranking suggests but then again so is world number 88 Jaume Munar, with both players struggling to close out good performances with victories on a number of occasions in recent seasons. 25-year-old Munar lost poorly to Matteo Arnaldi in the first round of the Barcelona Open last week but he took eventual Monte-Carlo champion Andrey Rublev to three sets before defeat in his previous match. Depending on the time of day Munar could receive a healthy support in Madrid but the high altitude certainly hands some advantages to hard-hitting Kokkinakis, whose forehand could be unplayable at times this week if he manages to find some rhythm. The Aussie should be winning this match in straight sets but taking him to earn at least one of them is the sensible concession right now.
