World number 168 Taylor Townsend and number 86 Ysaline Bonaventure both came through qualifying without dropping a set to make the main draw of the Italian Open in style. 27-year-old Townsend is on the long road back from maternity leave and well capable of top 50 tennis on her day whilst Bonaventure is just two places behind her career-high WTA world ranking. Neither player brings much singles form into the equation but Townsend reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open Women’s Doubles alongside Leylah Fernandez last week before just missing out in three sets to the eventual champions.
