THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Taylor Townsend will move back inside the top 90 on tour as she continues an excellent run of form since the start of the hardcourt swing. A women’s doubles title won alongside Leylah Fernandez at the Cincinnati Masters looks to have supercharged her confidence in the singles with recent victories over Beatriz Haddad-Maia and Ajla Tomljanovic but she has ridden her luck a little this week, beating lucky loser Elvina Kalieva in straight sets on Wednesday after Belinda Bencic withdrew from their second round clash. 22-year-old Emiliana Arango will be her toughest test this week as the Colombian has stunned Anastasia Potapova and Sloane Stephens to reach the round of 16 at a Masters for the first time. Arango will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 145th for her efforts so far but home-away-from-home support as a South American in Guadalajara should see her backed well as the underdog in this first encounter with Townsend. Sets look likely to go both ways here so back in-form Townsend to earn at least one or consider a one-off on three sets.
