28-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova came into Melbourne at a career-high WTA world ranking of 18th and she played like it on Tuesday, conceding just three games to in-form Ysaline Bonaventure. The Russian ended last season with a three-match losing streak but it was an excellent 2022 overall, with two WTA titles claimed at ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the Korea Open. World number 135 Taylor Townsend is no pushover, though, as a player with clear top 30 potential on her way back from maternity leave from the tour. The 26-year-old conceded just two games to Diane Patty on Tuesday to continue strong form from a title win on the ITF circuit late last year and a first meeting between the two looks like it could come closer than first appears. Alexandrova should be coming through the outright winner here but three sets seem likelier than two.
