28-year-old Taylor Townsend set a career-high WTA world ranking of 57th after reaching the third round of the Miami Open and the last 16 in Charleston last month, with victories over the likes of Elise Mertens, Sofia Kenin and Ekaterina Alexandrova proof of what she can do at her bullish best. The American took the first set from Mirra Andreeva in Madrid before defeat last time out to suggest she can maintain her recent clay form in this first encounter with world number 102 Brenda Fruhvirtova but the qualifier brings some excellent momentum into the first round after conceding just nine games to make her debut. 17-year-old Fruhvirtova is a clear future star but this will be only her eighth tour-level match this season and she has so far gathered little data on clay at this level.
