26-year-old Zhizhen Zhang stunned Cam Norrie from a set down late on Monday, outlasting the Brit in two impressive tiebreaks to continue the best run of his career. The Chinese will set a new career-high ATP world ranking inside the top 90 after taking his first three tour-level wins of the season but he will have to recover well after tough three-set comebacks in each of his last two. World number 10 Taylor Fritz was upset by another Chinese player, Yibing Wu, at the Dallas Open back in February and whilst that should not affect the American’s game here it will surely boost Zhang’s confidence in this first meeting. 25-year-old Fritz has so far beaten Christopher O’Connell and Cristian Garin in reasonably convincing straight sets and he certainly has all the tools required to excel in Madrid’s unique conditions. There has been at least a tiebreak in all five of these players combined matches so far in Madrid, so take that option here inside an accumulator and consider adding Fritz to earn at least a set. The American should be coming through in two here but underestimate Zhang’s momentum at your peril.
