World number two Novak Djokovic beat Borna Gojo in straight sets on Sunday to put his five-set comeback over Laslo Djere squarely in the rear view mirror. The 36-year-old won Roland-Garros in June to take an outright lead in the Men’s Singles Grand Slam record with a remarkable 23 major titles, including three won here in 2011, 2015 and 2018 but his five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon in July signalled a new era. Djokovic gained revenge on Alcaraz in a stupendous three-set comeback at the Cincinnati Open three weeks ago and the pair look likely to face off for a third time in as many months in the US Open final on Sunday.
World number nine Taylor Fritz has finally put in the sort of campaign he has been capable of for many years, reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time and without dropping a set. The 25-year-old was well challenged by Dominic Stricker on Sunday night, seeing his serve broken for the first time all campaign, but he is yet to face a player ranked inside the top 70 on tour. Fritz claimed his most prestigious of now six ATP titles at Indian Wells last season, with two ATP 250 trophies won this year on US hardcourts in Delray Beach and Atlanta.
THE PREDICTION
Taylor Fritz once took Novak Djokovic to five sets in a third round epic at the Australian Open two years ago, leaving the court on a wheelchair after the exertion, but he has otherwise been dominated by the Serb in one of the most convincing head-to-head records on tour. Djokovic leads their record 7-0 with six straight-set victories over the American, including each of the last four encounters after a one-sided clash in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open three weeks ago. Laslo Djere proved that intensity from the off is perhaps the only way to knock the three-time champion off of his stride but there are very few players on tour capable of maintaining that level over the three sets required. Fritz is well capable of earning at least a set here, with the first one likeliest against Djokovic, but it is likelier still that the Serb exerts dominance again in a straight-sets win. Take Djokovic to win outright inside and accumulator but in three on its own. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak with Fritz serving well so far in New York.
