World number 10 Taylor Fritz passed a significant test on clay on Wednesday, edging through a first-set tiebreak 12-10 against former Monte-Carlo champion Stan Wawrinka before blasting through the second. The 25-year-old failed to defend his Indian Wells title last month but back-to-back quarter-final exits to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on the Sunshine Double is no embarrassment and he claimed his fifth ATP title at the Delray Beach Open in February. World number 42 Jiri Lehecka grabbed an excellent straight sets victory over Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday to back-up a solid opener over Emil Ruusuvuori and he should be considered a proper threat as a rising star on the ATP tour. Fritz beat Lehecka in straight sets at the United Cup back in January but the Czech has visibly improved since then and his form so far on clay has been a welcome surprise. Back Fritz to win outright with three sets a distinct possibility here.
