THE PREDICTION
World number 10 Taylor Fritz was in a proper game with in-form Christopher O’Connell on Saturday, squeaking through the first-set tiebreak 13-11 before coming though in two. The 25-year-old is one of the most balanced all-courters on tour but he is yet to win a title on clay, with three of his five so far on hardcourts and two on grass from the Eastbourne International in 2019 and last year. Former world number 17 Cristian Garin also owns five ATP titles, all of which have come on his favoured clay. The 26-year-old is currently ranked at 73rd in the world but there have been encouraging signs of a resurgence in recent weeks, with a three-set victory overt Miomir Kecmanovic on Saturday one of his best. Garin has already seen three tiebreaks this week in Madrid and that makes four between their three matches so far. The Chilean won their only previous encounter in three sets, including a tiebreak, on clay at the Houston Open last year but back Fritz to earn at least a set here and add a tiebreak for good measure.
