World number nine Taylor Fritz made it five wins on the spin with a straight-sets victory over Zachary Svajda on Wednesday, maintaining the form that saw him lift the Atlanta Open trophy on Sunday. The 25-year-old has claimed his fifth and now sixth ATP titles this season, both on US hardcourts in Atlanta and Delray Beach, to look one of the clear title contenders here in Washington but he is the top seed in a very talented field. World number 44 Andy Murray played well to beat Brandon Nakashima in his first match back since that gruelling five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round of Wimbledon. The 36-year-old was hard done-by by the curfew at Wimbledon in much the same way he was hampered by a lack of one at the Australian Open in January but he will put that all to one side for the hardcourt swing, on which he has enjoyed plenty of success over the years. Fritz beat Murray in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Open last season but the former world number one is in much better shape this time around and more competitive off the clay. Take Fritz to earn at least a set and consider adding at least one tiebreak in the match for good measure.
