Eighth seed Taylor Fritz overcame Ugo Humbert in three sets on Wednesday for a strong opener to his Canada Masters campaign but it does not get any easier here. The world number nine recently won his second ATP title of the year, and sixth overall, at the Atlanta Open on a hardcourt but a defeat to Tallon Griekspoor in the semi-finals of Washington last week snapped a seven-match winning streak to display a little fragility. World number 18 Alex de Minaur finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Los Cabos Open last week and he has reacted impressively in Toronto, upsetting 11th seed Cam Norrie before a straight-sets result over wildcard Gabriel Diallo. The pair share a finely poised 3-3 head-to-head record but Fritz has overturned a 0-3 deficit with tight victories since the start of 2021 to look the favourite. Each of their last three matches have seen sets go both ways with at least a tiebreak to provide a useful combination. Take Fritz to earn at least one as the likelier of two very capable victors and add at least a tiebreak for value.
