World number 66 Tatjana Maria conceded just two games to teenager Alex Eala on Wednesday for a solid start to her Madrid Open campaign and she has a 7-1 record on clay this season after defending her Bogota Open title earlier this month. The 35-year-old should be ranked far higher after her remarkable run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon last summer went unrewarded in ranking points but she is probably the underdog still in this second round clash with Bernarda Pera. 28-year-old Pera comes into Madrid at a career-high WTA world ranking of 32nd built mostly on her first two titles won back-to-back at the Hungarian Open and German Open last summer on her favoured clay. The American enjoyed a solid run to the round of 16 at the Charleston Open earlier this month before defeat to Daria Kasatkina but her best result this season came in a big upset over Liudmila Samsonova at Indian Wells last month. Maria beat Pera in three tight sets on grass four years ago in Nottingham and this could come just as tight in conditions that suit both players.
