World number 62 Taro Daniel enjoyed a rare run to a tour-level final at the Auckland Classic last month, upsetting top seed Ben Shelton in the semi-finals before losing to fellow surprise finalist Alejandro Tabilo. The 31-year-old struggled to match that intensity so soon after in Melbourne, suffering an early exit there, but he came back from a set to oust Constant Lestienne on Monday to look a decent threat this week in Dallas. World number 15 Tommy Paul enjoyed a career-best run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open last season but he could not repeat the feat this time around, losing to Miomir Kecmanovic in five gruelling sets in the third round. The 26-year-old received a bye to the round of 16 at the Dallas Open as the second seed this week and he will be backed to the hilt as a popular, hard-working home favourite here.
Daniel won their first encounter in five sets at the US Open back in 2017 but Paul returned the favour in three in Adelaide in 2022. Both of their tour-level meetings have seen a decider, so take the match to see three sets or the safer route with at least a set for Paul.
