THE PREDICTION

World number 59 Roberto Carballes Baena received a bye to the round of 16 at the Umag Open as the fourth seed this week but he could probably have done with a kinder first round opener as his last win on clay came in the first round of Roland-Garros two months ago. The 30-year-old won the second ATP title of his career on his favoured clay at the Marrakech Open back in April to break the top 50 on tour for the first time and he will be desperate to capitalise on his strong 2023 form in this last clay tournament of the season on tour. World number 113 Taro Daniel also enjoyed the clay and the Japanese, also 30, is capable of tennis much better than his current ranking suggests. A comeback win over Martin Landaluce on Monday was a choppy way to start his Umag campaign but he beat RCB at Indian Wells earlier this season to level their head-to-head at 2-2 and they are 2-1 on clay. Back Daniel to earn at least a set with a match in his legs already to leave this tight one up to chance.
