THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Tallon Griekspoor broke into the top 30 on tour for the first time this week after winning his second ATP title of the season at the Libema Open, giving his home tournament a Dutch winner for the second year running. Griekspoor earned his maiden title at the Pune Open at the start of the season and he enjoyed some excellent form on hardcourts before falling away on the clay swing but a straight-sets victory over Roberto Carballes Baena on Tuesday was his sixth on the spin on grass to suggest he has a real chance at the upset here. World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz is the defending champion in Halle but the Pole survived an early scare on Tuesday in a three-set victory over Christopher Eubanks. Hurkacz, also 26, is one of the better players on grass on tour but he has struggled to find his best tennis practically ever since a remarkable victory over Daniil Medvedev here last summer.
The Pole reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2021 to prove his credentials on the surface but too many of his matches this season have gone to deciding sets, including a five-set victory over Griekspoor in the second round of Roland-Garros late last month. Back Griekspoor to earn at least a set or consider taking this match to need a decider.
