THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Tallon Griekspoor comes into the US Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th after an excellent season so far, winning his first two ATP titles in Pune and on home grass in ‘s-Hertogenbosch before more recently stepping it up with a run to the Washington final. The Dutchman has lost three of his last four matches since finishing runner-up to Dan Evans in Washington but victories over Gael Monfils and Taylor Fritz that week suggest he could set his best Grand Slam showing this fortnight with the right draw. 19-year-old Arthur Fils won his maiden ATP title on clay at the Lyon Open back in May and he recently made the semi-finals at the Hamburg 500, stunning Casper Ruud en-route, to set a career-high ATP world ranking of 46th. The Frenchman has so far looked at his best on clay but there is an essence of Holger Rune about his physicality at such a young age that says he can soon transfer that level over to hardcourts. This could well be a five-set thriller if both players bring their best but taking Griekspoor to edge through their first encounter seems reasonable in these conditions.
