THE PREDICTION
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas received a bye to the round of 16 here in Stuttgart as the top seed but he could probably have done with a kinder first round fixture. The 24-year-old played well at Roland-Garros to reach the quarter-finals but he was roundly trounced by Carlos Alcaraz there to display the current gap in quality. The Greek is coming up to a year since his last ATP title was claimed, on grass, at the Mallorca Championships and this is certainly his least favourite surface on tour. 36-year-old Richard Gasquet beat Christopher Eubanks in straight sets on Monday to get a useful win on grass in his legs and the Frenchman beat Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Libema Open on grass back in 2018, the same season that Tsitsipas won their first encounter to see a 1-1 head-to-head record here.
Tsitsipas is the clear favourite but Gasquet has all the experience, and likely most of the backing by the crowd, to make things interesting. The suitably cautious move is backing Tsitsipas to win at least a set but you could consider taking Gasquet to do the same. You could also add at least a tiebreak in the match as the pair played two in their last encounter.
