World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas looked assured in a straight-sets victory over John Isner on Wednesday to open his Los Cabos account. The 24-year-old improved on grass this summer to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon but he was upset by Nicolas Jarry at this stage of the Halle Open in June to set-up what could be a thrilling rematch. World number 28 Jarry overcame Gijs Brouwer in three sets on Wednesday to back-up a much more comfortable opener. The 27-year-old has won two ATP titles this season on his favoured clay but he has impressed across surfaces so far in what is already the best year of his career. A four-set defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the third round of Wimbledon last month proved the depths to which the Chilean can plumb but it is likely that Tsitsipas can overcome him on a hardcourt, just a she did on clay at the Monte-Carlo Open in April. Jarry leads their head-to-head record 2-1 but back Tsitsipas to win outright here as he continues to improve his mentality on court.
