World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Nuno Borges in straight sets on Saturday to get a foothold at the Italian Open, where he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic last season. The 24-year-old remains one of the very best players on clay on tour but there have been plenty of fitness and mentality issues, most likely linked, dogging his confidence on court for the best part of the last two seasons that make matches like this a concern. World number 48 Lorenzo Sonego is a fans’ favourite here in Rome, where he also lost late-on to Djokovic in the semi-finals of the 2021 edition, and he will command a partisan atmosphere under the lights on Centre Court. The 28-year-old is yet to drop a set after ousting Yoshihito Nishioka on Saturday and despite trailing Tsitsipas 0-2 in their head-to-head both of their matches have been well contested. Anywhere else on tour Tsitsipas would be a solid favourite to win through in straight sets but back Sonego to take at least a set here with the sheer will of Rome behind him.
