Former world number three Stan Wawrinka capped off the strongest three years of his illustrious career with a third Grand Slam title here in 2016, backing up his first in Melbourne in 2014 and second at Roland-Garros in 2015. The 38-year-old has steadily improved over the past 12 months on tour to move back inside the top 50 this week, with his recent runners-up place to Alexei Popyrin in Umag his first tour final since 2019. A remarkable victory over Frances Tiafoe at the Cincinnati Masters was proof of what he can still do but a defeat to Max Purcell in the round of 16 was equally symptomatic of his inescapable age on tour. World number 44 Yoshihito Nishioka found the form of his career on the late hardcourt swing this time last season but the Japanese has struggled at the US Open over the years with two second round exits his best showing so far. Wawrinka should have too much experience to fall into the Japanese’s traps here but it would not be a surprise to see the match see four or even five sets. Back the Swiss to start his campaign strong with an outright win, especially as Nishioka has struggled in recent months.
