Former world number three Stan Wawrinka rolled back the years to outlast Albert Ramos-Vinolas in five sets on Monday and he clearly enjoyed the reception of a former champion throughout. The 38-year-old is a popular player here in Paris as one of just four men to win Roland-Garros since Rafael Nadal claimed his first of 14 trophies back in 2005. As good as the Swiss is on clay he cannot fight time and a five-set opener was certainly not what the doctor ordered, with back-to-back wins a bug ask for the veteran in this tough match-up against Thanasi Kokkinakis’ ripper forehand. World number 108 Kokkinakis is much better than his current deflated ranking suggests but a straight-sets victory over Dan Evans came as a big surprise in the first round on his weakest surface. It would be quite reasonable to confidently side with Wawrinka in this first meeting between the two had he not exerted so much energy against Ramos-Vinolas but he will know this is likely his last year in Paris at a competitive level.
