THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Stan Wawrinka is yet to drop a set at the Umag Open after two straightforward wins over Filip Misolic and Federico Coria. The 38-year-old veteran has played well throughout this season as he continues to fight and scrap his way back up the world rankings but he has struggled to go deep in tournaments due to fatigue more than anything else. World number 59 Roberto Carballes Baena will know to do everything he can to tire out his opponent here and he started well on Thursday with a comfortable victory over Taro Daniel. The 30-year-old won the Marrakech Open at this level back in April to back-up some strong results so far in 2023 and he is arguable enjoying the form of his career. The pair met just last week at the Gstaad Open before RCB was forced to retire injured in their second set but Wawrinka had control of that match then to suggest he is the favourite here. Backing Wawrinka to win outright feels reasonable enough but Carballes Baena is well capable of dragging this match to the distance.
