This should be a thrilling 27th edition of a storied former rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka on Friday, with the Swiss earning two of his three Grand Slam titles at Djokovic’s expense at Roland-Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. Former world number three Wawrinka is enjoying some strong form this season in the twilight of his career at 38 years old but whilst he can still produce some electrifying tennis on court the scheduling, affected badly by Tuesday’s washout, will heavily count against him here. A four-set victory over the tireless Tomas Martin Etcheverry was already a significant step as only his fourth back-to-back win this year but coming back the following day to play the four-time defending champion is a cruel reward indeed. 36-year-old Djokovic made it 30 wins on the spin at Wimbledon with a competitive straight-sets victory over Jordan Thompson on Wednesday and the Serb’s campaign has been largely uninterrupted so far on Centre Court.
World number two Djokovic leads Wawrinka 20-6 so far in their head-to-head, stretching back to the Umag Open final in 2006, and realistically he would have won this first ever encounter on grass in straight sets no matter how much rest Wawrinka could accrue. Wawrinka will throw everything at this but grass is certainly his weakest surface and fatigue could set in around the second set. Back Djokovic to win in three.
