THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Stan Wawrinka produced perhaps his best display on tour since his return last spring with a remarkable straight-sets victory over world number 10 Frances Tiafoe. The 38-year-old has been working tirelessly to edge steadily back up the rankings, no small task for a player his age, and he looks more confident following his recent runner-up finish to Alexei Popyrin at the Umag Open last month – his first final since 2019. 25-year-old Max Purcell has also been grafting his way up the rankings this season, with plenty of hard work going unnoticed on the Challenger tour. The Aussie will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 54th after stunning fifth seed Casper Ruud in three sets on Wednesday, backing up a strong opener over Lloyd Harris. Purcell had only just grabbed the biggest ranking result of his career last week in Toronto with victory over 10th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime but Ruud usurps that as his first top 10 victory ever.
Much of this first meeting relies on Wawrinka’s recovery from a huge effort against Tiafoe but three sets seem likelier than two between two form players. Take the Swiss to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors or consider three sets on its own.
