THE PREDICTION
38-year-old Stan Wawrinka won his maiden ATP title here in Umag back in 2006 and he will throw everything he has left at this weekend with no small amount of fate surrounding his results so far. The former world number three is desperately seeking a first title on tour since the Geneva Open in 2017 but more importantly since returning from potentially career-ending surgery last season, with some strong runs late last year slowly turning into generally strong form in 2023. The Swiss has yet to drop a set this week to conserve as much energy as possible but the winner of the Croatia Open is likely to some from this semi-final as world number 43 Lorenzo Sonego looks a serious threat. The 28-year-old came back from a set down to fend off Jaume Munar on Friday, backing-up a straight-sets victory over Marco Cecchinato, to continue some strong form he was developing on clay before a fairly woeful grass swing. Wawrinka is likely to receive a hero’s welcome on to court with tennis fans fully aware of his plight but Sonego is a very tough player to beat at this stage of a tournament. Take the Swiss to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
