THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Stan Wawrinka is one of just four men to have won Roland-Garros since Rafael Nadal’s first of 14 titles here in 2005, beating Novak Djokovic from a set down in 2015. The Swiss finished runner-up to Nadal here back in 2017 in his only defeat in four major finals, with three Grand Slam titles to his name after collecting the Australian open in 2014 and the US Open in 2016. Whilst the 38-year-old no longer has the staying power to cause serious harm to the latter stages of this draw he remains a remarkable player, particularly on clay, capable of beating almost anyone in his opening match. World number 66 Albert Ramos-Vinolas almost upset Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of Roland-Garros last summer but the Spaniard, a fellow tour veteran at 35 years old, brings a poor 6-15 record into the first round. Wawrinka has endured plenty of tough draws this season but he leads Ramos-Vinolas 7-0, and 5-0 on clay, to look the solid favourite to come through unscathed here. Back the Swiss to win outright.
