THE PREDICTION
World number nine Maria Sakkari received a bye through to the round of 16 at the Abu Dhabi Open as the third seed this week but she could probably have done with a kinder opener after another Grand Slam early exit in Melbourne last month. The 28-year-old finally won her second WTA title with a maiden Masters trophy claimed in Guadalajara late last year but a second round defeat to Elina Avanesyan at the Australian Open furthered big concerns that she may struggle again this season. 33-year-old Sorana Cirstea found the best form of her career for some time, if not ever, this time last season to get within touching distance of her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st that she set well over a decade ago. The Romanian is just five places behind that now and she will be desperate to build this month before she drops a lot of ranking points in March.
A comeback victory over Caroline Garcia on Monday was an eye-catching result and she leads Sakkari 2-1 in their head-to-head, although the Greek took their most recent meeting from a set down in August last year. Cirstea has won at least a set in each of their three meetings so back her to maintain that streak here to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: SORANA CIRSTEA TO WIN A SET
