THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Magdalena Frech can break the top 70 on tour for the first time with one more win in Birmingham after a solid opener over Barbora Strycova on Tuesday. The 25-year-old impressed here last season but just fell short in a three-set defeat to eventual champion Beatriz Haddad-Maia and she went on to enjoy a career-best run to the third round at Wimbledon for some solid grass pedigree. World number 38 Sorana Cirstea has enjoyed an ultimately excellent season so far but the 33-year-old has peaked and roughed wildly in recent months. Runs to the quarter-finals and semi-finals of Indian Wells and the Miami Open made a poor clay swing all the more surprising and it remains to be seen how she takes to grass after a three-set opener against fellow Romanian Ana Bogdan. Three sets seem likely in this first encounter between the two but Frech has the better recent form. Take the Pole to earn at least a set or risk a one-off on the match to need a decider.
