THE PREDICTION

World number 44 Sorana Cirstea has enjoyed some of the best tennis of her long career over the last few seasons but after a drab spell she surprised everyone with a huge run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open late last month. The 33-year-old claimed her second WTA title on clay at the Istanbul Cup in 2021, a full 13 years on from lifting her maiden title in Tashkent, and she reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros way back in 2009. Cirstea can boast victories over Madison Keys, Karolina Muchova, Marketa Vondrousova, Caroline Garcia (twice) and Aryna Sabalenka within her last two tournaments and she should be considered a genuine threat to the latter stages of the Madrid Open if she can avoid a choppy opener here. World number 56 Lauren Davis has also enjoyed 2023 so far after adding her second WTA title at the Hobart International back in January and the American likes her game on clay too. The American has struggled with both form and fitness in recent month, though, to suggest that Cirstea can come through this first meeting in just over a decade in straight sets.
