THE LOWDOWN
33-year-old Sorana Cirstea is playing the best, most concise tennis of her long career here in New York. The world number 30 stunned fourth seed Elena Rybakina in three sets on Saturday to make the round of 16 at the US Open for the first time and she has now matched her best showing at a Grand Slam 14 years on from her only previous quarter-final reached at Roland-Garros in 2009. Cirstea found form like this at the Sunshine Double back in March, losing to Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and to Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals of Miami, and one more run like it before next March should see her break the top 20 on tour for the first time.
27-year-old Karolina Muchova should set a new career-high WTA world ranking of ninth after overcoming Xinyu Wang in three sets on Sunday to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time. The Czech famously upset Ash Barty to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open, setting her Grand Slam benchmark on her favoured hardcourts, but she surpassed that with a remarkable run to the Roland-Garros final in June before taking Iga Swiatek closer than anyone in a three-set defeat. Muchova finished runner-up to Coco Gauff at the Cincinnati Masters three weeks ago to bring serious form into New York and her chances of going further were significantly improved by Swiatek’s shock defeat on Sunday.
THE PREDICTION
This will be the fourth meeting between Karolina Muchova and Sorana Cirstea this season, with Muchova beating the Romanian in straight sets en-route to the Cincinnati final last month. Cirstea beat Muchova in straight sets in her own deep run at the Miami Masters back in March but Muchova was still very much in recovery from a long injury lay-off back then, with her win in their first meeting at the Dubai Masters the month before particularly impressive. The Czech leads Cirstea 3-1 in their head-to-head after claiming their first encounter in the third round here back in 2020 and backing her to edge through the outright winner in this form looks a reasonable call despite Cirstea’s incredible run.
