World number 34 Sorana Cirstea survived an early scare on Wednesday, coming back from a set down to beat Katie Volynets to maintain her winning run from the Catalonia Challenger last week. The 33-year-old is currently enjoying some of the form of her career with two remarkable recent runs to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and semi-finals of the Miami Open and she could have gone much further than the third round in Madrid had she not met eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka – whom she beat in Miami for a third top 10 scalp this season. World number 20 Jelena Ostapenko is one of the better clay-courters out there as a former Roland-Garros champion from 2017 but the Latvian has struggled to find, and then maintain, her best level throughout this season. At her best there are very few players capable of matching Ostapenko but anything less than that lets good players into the match.
