THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Belinda Bencic dropped her first set of the tournament in a well-fought battle over Lin Zhu to reach the round of 16 at the US Open for the third time. The 26-year-old has never lost at this stage of the tournament with two quarter-final exits in 2014 and 2021 bettered by her semi-final exit to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu in 2019. World number 30 Sorana Cirstea also dropped her first set of the campaign but her three-set victory over fourth seed Elena Rybakina could well be the biggest of her entire career to reach the last 16 for the first time here. The 33-year-old found some peak form at the Sunshine Double on US hardcourts back in March but beating Rybakina at a Grand Slam surpasses all that in spades. Bencic beat the Romanian in the second round here last summer but Cirstea leads their head-to-head record 2-1 on hardcourts and she has earned at least a set in all three of their encounters. Back Cirstea to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance and consider a one off on three sets here.
