THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating rematch between world number two Aryna Sabalenkla and number 44 Sorana Cirstea after Cirstea stunned the Belarusian in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open this time last month. 33-year-old Cirstea also stunned Caroline Garcia, Markets Vondrousova and Karolina Muchova en-route to the semi-finals in Miami before she was finally stopped by eventual champion Petra Kvitova. The Romanian took the best part of a month off to recuperate after such an emotional fortnight and a three-set win over Lauren Davis on Tuesday was a strong result given the circumstances. Since their last encounter Sabalenka has finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Stuttgart Open for a second year running with brilliant results over top players on clay in Paula Badosa and Barbora Krejcikova and she should be better equipped to beat Cirstea this time around. The 24-year-old won her most recent of three WTA Masters titles here back in 2021 and she should make the most of the conditions here at altitude to level her head-to-head with Cirstea with a straight-sets win.
