THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Christopher Eubanks will come into a Grand Slam as a seed for the first time after his remarkable evolution this season. The world number 30 first burst into form at the Miami Open in March with a run to the quarter-finals eventually ended by champion Daniil Medvedev and after a few months in the background he came to the fore again with a maiden title won at the Mallorca Championships. Eubanks took that new-found love for grass into Wimbledon to become one of the main stories at SW19, stunning the likes of Cam Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas before a hugely competitive five-set defeat to, once again, Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. The American takes a 3-4 record on hardcourts since Wimbledon into New York for a bit of concern but he will be backed to the hilt by a partisan crowd against Soonwoo Kwon, who plays his first match since suffering an injury back in February.
World number 104 Kwon started 2023 off on fire with a second career title won at Adelaide 2 and it remains to be seen where his level is after such a long absence. The 25-year-old is well capable of providing an upset here nut back Eubanks to come through a likely choppy opener the outright winner.
