THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Sofia Kenin has the game to excel in these conditions but she has struggled to find it, and then keep hold of it, practically ever since finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros in 2020. The 25-year-old claimed her maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne earlier that year but the pandemic, and a whole series of on-and-off court setbacks since, have left her with a serious amount of baggage that seemed half-solved late last season but looks back with a vengeance in 2024.

Kenin’s seven-match losing streak coming in to Madrid suggests that world number 68 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova, who is at her best on clay, is the solid favourite to come through this intriguing clash but the Slovak has also struggled in recent weeks – losing three of her last four since making the semi-finals in Austin. Kenin beat Schmiedlova to claim the Hobart International title in 2019, one of her five WTA titles to date, but this rematch could come much closer. Take Schimedlova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: ANNA-KAROLINA SCHMIEDLOVA TO WIN A SET
